Top 5 Questions PEOPLE Ask Me about Engagement Sessions

Getting engagement photos taken can feel a bit nerve-wracking, especially if you’re not used to being in the spotlight (like most of us). Whether you’re already engaged or eagerly anticipating the big question. I’m here to offer some valuable tips I’ve gathered over the years from some common questions I get asked about engagement sessions.

1. Where should we go for the shoot?

This one is important. Couples often ask me where the best locations are for photos, or if I know a good photogenic location. Of course, there are plenty of stunning places in the Sydney, Illawarra and Southern Highlands regions. It’s packed with goodness and I can recommend so many places to go. But if I can encourage you to think outside the box for a minute. Think about what places hold value and meaning to you. The engagement session isn’t about photographing a landscape, it’s about getting photos of you and your partner and it doesn’t have to be in the most picturesque locations.

Select a location that holds significance for both of you. Whether it’s the place where you first met, your favourite park, or a scenic spot that speaks to your heart. Opting for a meaningful backdrop will add depth and authenticity to your photos. If you love making coffee together and snuggling on the couch with some good ol’ Netflix, maybe an at-home session is right for you.

Top 5 Questions on Engagement Sessions

If you’re an adventurous couple who spends your weekends hiking, consider taking photos at your favourite hiking track, gear in tow. Don’t be afraid to incorporate your favourite activities. Or you could simply choose somewhere with lovely views that reflect your identity as a couple in some way. The main thing is the location reflects you in some way or another. It’s important to consider choosing somewhere you know you will feel comfortable laughing, cuddling, and generally interacting easily with the space.

2. What should we wear?

Coordinating your outfits can elevate the visual appeal of your photos without being too matchy-matchy. Consider complementing colours, textures, and styles that reflect your personalities while ensuring you both feel comfortable and confident. Here’s a curated list to help you look your best and feel comfortable in front of the camera:

  • Consider the location and season –  Dress appropriately for the location and time of year. Light, airy fabrics work well for outdoor shoots in warm weather. While layers and textures can add interest during cooler seasons.
  • Choose timeless over trendy. While it’s tempting to go for the latest fashion trends, opt for classic pieces that won’t date your photos. Timeless styles tend to age better and keep the focus on you and your partner.
  • Show your personality – I’m always talking about being true to your personality. Your engagement photos should reflect who you are as a couple. Incorporate elements of your style, whether it’s quirky accessories, vintage pieces, or casual attire that speaks to your lifestyle.
  • Avoid busy patterns and logos. Large, distracting patterns or logos like KSCY or Popular Sporting Logos can take attention away from you and your partner. Opt for simpler, more subtle patterns or solid colours to keep the focus on your faces and connection.
  • Don’t forget about comfort. You’ll likely be moving around quite a bit during your engagement shoot (it’s certainly how I love to shoot. I’m never static in my approach), so prioritise comfort. Choose outfits that allow you to move freely and feel confident. Whether you’re sitting, standing, or walking hand in hand with your partner.
  • Accessorise – Accessories can add personality and visual interest to your outfits. Consider incorporating hats, scarves, statement jewellery, or other accessories that complement your look. Accessories can be helpful if you’re not sure what to do with your hands

It comes down to letting your personalities shine through in your attire and overall styling and location. Whether you’re casual and laid-back. Or glamorous and sophisticated. Stay true to your personal style which will lead you to decide your location too. You want to ensure your photos feel authentic and genuine.

3. What’s the best time for the shoot?

The best time for an outdoor photo shoot is often during the golden hour when the light is soft and flattering. However, if you prefer an urban style, indoors or at home, then it doesn’t matter what time you choose, just make sure it works for the location you’ve chosen.

4. Do we need to bring anything?

You don’t have to, but if you want to add a personal touch to your engagement session, then consider incorporating meaningful props or even bringing your pet along. Whether it’s a picnic in the park, a stroll along the beach with your beloved fur baby, or sharing your favourite hobby, these elements can infuse that authenticity into your photos.

5. Should I organise it with my Makeup and Hair?

Absolutely you should. If you haven’t done your hair and makeup consultation trial with your wedding day stylist yet, this is a great time to schedule it. You’ll knock out two birds with one makeup brush. If you haven’t even considered doing a trial run, I highly suggest you speak to your hair and makeup artist about doing one.
