Why I Don’t Shoot Film at Weddings

(And Why That’s a Good Thing!)

I get a lot of questions from couples asking if I shoot film. The short answer? No, I don’t. But not because I don’t love the look of film—believe me, I do. There’s something undeniably nostalgic and beautiful about it. However, when it comes to photographing weddings, digital is my tool of choice, and I want to share why.

Creative Control Matters

One of the biggest reasons I choose digital is simple: it allows me to have complete creative control. From composing the shot to the final edit, every step is in my hands. With film, I’d have to rely on a lab for development and scanning, which takes a significant part of my artistic process out of my control. Digital lets me fine-tune every detail, ensuring that your final images not only reflect my vision and style but also seamlessly match the rest of your gallery in tone and colour, which leads to my next point.

Consistency Matters

Consistency in colour is incredibly important to me. Imagine scrolling through your wedding gallery and noticing some images with a completely different colour tone—it would feel disjointed. After years of perfecting my colour accuracy to ensure every photo flows seamlessly, I couldn’t justify introducing film images that, in the end, would still be viewed digitally alongside the rest. Maintaining that cohesion is what makes your gallery feel intentional and beautifully curated.

Convenience & Reliability

Weddings are unpredictable. Light changes, weather shifts, emotions run high, and moments unfold in an instant. Digital allows me to adapt quickly, adjust settings on the fly, and shoot as much as needed without worrying about running out of film. Plus, I have instant feedback—I can see what I’m capturing in real-time and make adjustments if needed to ensure the best possible outcome.

Film Aesthetics? I’ve Got That Covered

Every image you see in this blog post was shot digitally, not on film. I have a process that enhances edits to achieve that gorgeous, film-inspired look for certain images. It’s something I can easily apply—especially if it’s a style you love and want for some of your wedding photos.

Final Thoughts

I get the appeal of film—there’s a reason so many couples love its timeless, nostalgic feel. That’s why my editing style embraces those beautiful film-like cinematic tones while still preserving the clarity and reliability of digital. With the right approach to colour grading, texture, and light, I can create images that carry all the charm of film while maintaining the flexibility and consistency of digital.
